Big game Sunday!
Here we are, with a mouthwatering clash between two of the Big 4 up ahead, as well as a few other intriguing clashes. Yep, Sunday is here, and as usual, it brings with it a feast of Premiership football…
Chelsea vs Liverpool
The game of the weekend, and one of the games everyone looks for when the fixture list is drawn up. Chelsea are in dominant form while Liverpool have been “scraping results”, according to many. According to that, it should be a straightforward Chelsea win, but football doesn’t always work like that. Their exceptionally long unbeaten home record is definitely under threat in this one.
Pundit’s corner:
A lot of pundit’s are predicting a draw here, which wouldn’t be a surprise, since Liverpool are very good at getting a result on the road when they need to. The only thing that bothers me about this view is that it’s been a very strange season up till now, so I’m not going to sit on the fence… Liverpool to end Chelsea’s unbeaten home run and confirm their ability to challenge this season. With the big match at Stamford Bridge, Paddy Power’s specials include a Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard head-to-head, 1st player to be booked and, after the 11 minutes of injury time at Stoke last week, how many minutes of 2nd half injury time there will be.
Man City vs Stoke
City haven’t had everything their own way since being taken over, and are finding that teams in the Premiership don’t just lie down and let you walk all over them. Having said that, they still possess an awesome attacking threat which can tear any team apart on their day. Stoke are finding life a bit tough in the top league, but have shown that they can fight and scrap with the best of them.
Pundit’s corner:
You feel that Man City could run riot here if Stoke try to open the game up too much. The best that Stoke will be hoping for from this game is to sneak a draw, but that looks highly unlikely with the talent that City have. A routine home win for the Blue half of Manchester.
Tottenham vs Bolton
The big news going into this game is that Ramos has just been sacked and that it looks like Harry Redknapp will be taking over at Spurs. This is no great surprise because Ramos had been given plenty of time to achieve the results and didn’t do it. Bolton will still provide a stern test at White Hart Lane because of their ability to make things difficult for the opposition.
Pundit’s corner:
With the new manager coming in, Spurs’ players will be trying extra hard to impress and keep their places in the team. No games are easy in this league, but I expect Spurs to get their season on the road here and start their climb out of the relegation places.
Wigan vs Aston Villa
Two teams playing pretty good football at times this season, but who also let their concentration slip at times in defence, so this could potentially be a pretty good game offensively. Amr Zaki has suddenly found himself the centre of attention all over Europe and Steve Bruce will live to regret not signing him up on a long-term deal when he could have.
Pundit’s corner:
Zaki can further strengthen his claims for a big-money move to a top European club with a goal or two against an unusually leaky Villa defence, while Villa have so many attacking options of their own from which they can hurt you. I’m going for a draw here, but would like to see quite a few goals fly in.
West Ham vs Arsenal
A London derby, and this one could be tighter than most people expect. Zola’s West Ham are starting to play some attractive football, even if they aren’t always getting the results that it deserves. The same could be said of Arsenal, who need to start winning consistently if they are to challenge for the title this season.
Pundit’s corner:
A fancy Arsenal to take this one, but it’s still not going to be easy for them. They are playing fantastic football at times, but teams in this division have already shown that they are going to physically go out and make life as difficult for them as they can. Still, the Gunners should have enough to win this one.
Portsmouth vs Fulham
The sudden departure of their manager will definitely affect Portsmouth, and it will be interesting to see how they handle it in their first few games without him. Fulham, on the other hand, have been pretty awful of late, and are really struggling to score goals. They look like certain relegation candidates this season.
Pundit’s corner:
Even with Redknapp gone, Portsmouth should still have enough quality to overcome what is, quite frankly, a very poor Fulham side. Defoe and Crouch should combine for a couple of goals here.
